We’re all online more than ever. Sometimes it feels like a feature of the internet is how easily people can be shitty to each other with almost zero cost. Whether it’s a snide comment on a creator’s post, anonymous hate in a gaming lobby, or a coordinated pile-on after a mistake — the negativity is everywhere. It’s exhausting. It’s real. And it’s not inevitable.
This isn’t about toxic positivity — pretending everything’s fine or gaslighting survivors of abuse into “forgiving.” It’s about recognizing how normalizing casual cruelty damages individuals and communities, and about taking concrete steps to change behavior and systems so that people can be accountable for their actions.
Why negativity spreads so fast

Low friction, high impact. Typing a hurtful line and hitting send takes seconds. The person on the receiving end has to live with the message far longer. The balance of effort vs. harm is wildly skewed.

Anonymity and distance. When you can’t see the face on the other end, empathy drops. Anonymity reduces social consequences and turns empathy off like a switch.

Why “just be nicer” isn’t the full answer

Yes — people are fucking negative online. That’s true. But the culture didn’t appear overnight, and it won’t disappear overnight.
