Invasions are a PVE event that involves defending a town from being overthrown by corrupted enemies by defending its fort. Invasions are caused by a zone not maintaining the amount of corruption within it. Basically, if a zone does not keep destroying corruption portals when they pop up around the map, the corruption will build and eventually “schedule” an invasion of a city/town.
If a town fails to defend itself from an invasion, the various crafting platforms and stations as well as fort upgrades will be downgraded. Therefore the town is less desirable for people to live in and craft in.

Another description:
In New World, Invasions are large-scale PvE (player versus environment) events where players join forces to defend their territory from waves of increasingly powerful enemies known as The Corrupted. These events are designed to provide players with challenging and engaging cooperative gameplay experiences.
Invasions typically occur in territories where players have established settlements. When an Invasion is imminent, a notification appears on the map, and players are given a window of time to sign up for the event. Participants are chosen from a mix of volunteers and random selection.
During an Invasion, players must defend their fort from waves of Corrupted enemies. These waves become progressively more difficult, testing the players’ teamwork, communication, and combat skills. Players must utilize various weapons, abilities, and structures such as turrets, barricades, and traps to fend off the attackers.
If players successfully defend their territory, they are rewarded with experience points, in-game currency, and various other rewards. However, if they fail, the territory’s infrastructure, such as crafting stations and fort upgrades, may be damaged or downgraded, and the territory may be more susceptible to future attacks.
Invasions are an essential aspect of New World’s dynamic and evolving gameplay, as they encourage cooperation and strategy among players, while also providing a sense of urgency and danger within the game world.
